What to Expect in Field Education

Field education is an essential and required component of the BSSW and MSSW programs at the College of Social Work. Unlike traditional internships, field placements immerse students in hands-on social work practice, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge under the supervision of experienced professionals. In these settings, students integrate theory, research, and practice in a variety of environments.

Time Commitment and Structure

The minimum time required for field instruction is one hour per week of supervision. However, field instructors should expect to spend more than an hour per week orienting students and providing any specialized training that is needed. Field instructors are also expected to be available to students for consultation between weekly supervision sessions.

Diverse Placement Opportunities

We partner with organizations statewide and nationally to provide diverse field placement opportunities, including schools, hospitals, state agencies, courts, emergency shelters, mental health centers, and more. Limited opportunities for international placements are also available. These experiences help students master social work knowledge, values, and skills in real-world settings.

Field Seminar and Placement Process

Students also participate in a field seminar designed to prepare them for successful placements. Our College Field Coordinators collaborate with students to match their practice interests with approved placement sites, guiding them through placement interviews and ensuring they follow the proper planning procedures.

Employment-Based Field Placements

The field manual provides detailed guidelines for students seeking to complete a field placement at their place of employment. This option allows students to gain supervised field experience while continuing in their current roles.
