Is the UT Knoxville social work program accredited?
Yes. The Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) — the national accrediting body for social work education programs. CSWE accreditation ensures that our program meets rigorous national standards and that graduates are eligible for professional licensure.
What can you do with a bachelor’s degree in social work?
A BSSW degree qualifies you for careers as a caseworker, healthcare social worker, child welfare specialist, substance abuse counselor, community organizer, nonprofit program coordinator, school social worker, and more. Graduates work in hospitals, schools, government agencies, mental health clinics, nonprofit organizations, and private-sector settings.

Can I earn my BSSW degree online?
Yes. The University of Tennessee College of Social Work offers a fully online BSSW program with the same CSWE-accredited curriculum as the on-campus program. The online program is designed for transfer students with 60 credit hours and is delivered through synchronous (live) video conference sessions. Tennessee community college graduates receive guaranteed admission.
What is the difference between a BSW and an MSW?
A Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW/BSW) is an undergraduate degree that prepares you for entry-level generalist social work practice and LBSW licensure. A Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW/MSW) is a graduate degree that qualifies you for advanced practice, clinical licensure (LCSW), and specialized roles in areas like therapy, policy, and program management. At UT, high-achieving BSSW students can earn both degrees in five years through the Honors Program.
What licensure can I earn with a BSSW from UT?
Graduates of our CSWE-accredited BSSW program are eligible to sit for the ASWB Bachelor’s exam and pursue the Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) credential in Tennessee. The LBSW is the entry-level professional license for social work practice. Graduates who continue to an MSW/MSSW can pursue LMSW and eventually LCSW licensure.
How do I apply to the BSSW program?
Students apply to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, through the general undergraduate admissions process. Once enrolled and meeting prerequisites (including SOWK 200, SOWK 250, and a 2.5+ GPA), students apply for progression to upper-division social work courses (SOWK 312+). Progression is competitive and based on GPA, course performance, and a personal essay.
Does UT offer social work scholarships?
Yes. The College of Social Work and the University of Tennessee offer a variety of scholarships and financial aid options for BSSW students, including merit-based and need-based awards. Tennessee residents may also qualify for the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship, Tennessee Promise, and other state-funded aid programs.
