Course Description

This interactive 3-hour workshop focuses on the intersection of wellness, stress management and care for self in professional social work practice.  Participants will explore revisions to the NASW Code of Ethics which now mandate care for self as an aspect of professional competency; a review of research evidence supporting self-care will also be included.  The six common types of self-care will be discussed and applied through interactive activities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize signs of stress, burnout, and vicarious trauma in professional and personal life;
  2. Identify key 2021 revisions to the NASW Code of Ethics related to self-care and competency;
  3. Describe why self-care is critical to ethical and effective social work practice as supported by research; and
  4. Explore six common types of self-care.

CEUs

This program was approved by the National Association of Social Workers – Tennessee Chapter for 2 continuing education units and 1 continuing education unit in Ethics.

A link for the program evaluation will be emailed to participants after the event has concluded. To receive the CEU certificate, participants must complete the evaluation by the deadline indicated in that email. Certificates are not automatically generated and will be emailed out after the deadline to complete the evaluation has passed.

About the Presenter

Valerie Radu, PhD, LCSW completed her doctoral work at Case Western Reserve University in the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.  She holds an MSW degree from Walla Walla University and a BSW degree from Southern Adventist University. She has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Tennessee since 1996 and was the founding Executive Director of the Chattanooga Hamilton County Family Justice Center from 2014 to 2019. Dr. Radu was the MSW Program Director at NorthCentral University from 2019-2022 and is now a Full Professor in the MSW Program at National University.  She has over 25 years of experience as a practitioner, community leader, faculty member and academic administrator in higher education settings.  She has provided clinical social work supervision for MSWs seeking clinical licensure for the past 10 years through individual and group consultation.

Valerie is a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and an avid hiker and serves as the lead ambassador for the SE region of the statewide organization, Girls Who Hike Tennessee. In 2018, she completed a Level II certification as an Ecotherapist through the EarthBody Institute.  She has completed advanced clinical earth-based trainings through the School of Lost Borders and the Animas Institute.  Her private practice, Earth & Soul Integrative Practice, focuses on one of her areas of expertise: trauma-informed individual and small group work with women and integrating mindfulness and nature-based healing practices into clinical experiences.  Since 1996 she has been a frequent presenter on aging issues, diversity/cultural competence, and leadership development in the southeastern United States for a variety of professional organizations and groups.
