OVERVIEW
Research implicates the long-term benefits of evidence-based programs in mitigating the challenges faced by Latino immigrant communities, yet there remains a scarcity in their cultural adaptation and widespread dissemination. Drawing from a scoping review, this presentation explores culturally-adapted programs for this population, including those that address the risk and protective factors related to behavioral health challenges. Implications promoting ethical practice to elevate program delivery and client engagement will be discussed, pivoting around advocacy to support the well-being of Latino immigrant communities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As a result of attending this presentation, participants will:

  1. Gain an understanding of the benefits associated with evidence-based programs to address challenges within Latino immigrant communities;
  2. Explore cultural adaptation as an effective approach to address the program barriers experienced by a diverse community; and
  3. Acquire practical strategies and implications for advancing cultural adaptation in prevention to enhance client engagement.

PRESENTER
Eliza Galvez, LMSW is a Ph.D. student and graduate research assistant at the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from Georgia State University and an M.S.W. from Kennesaw State University. Her scholarly pursuits are centered on the mental health and well-being of Latino and immigrant communities to inform service provision in new destination states, with a particular focus on culturally-responsive and trauma-responsive care. Galvez’s scholarship is driven through her previous work with these communities in various non-profit agencies and health systems focused on their mental health. Additionally, Galvez actively engages in community-based presentations aimed at raising awareness of the specific healthcare needs of Latinos in Tennessee.
