Study Abroad Trip: Comparative Healthcare Systems in London and Rome
Course Title: Comparative Healthcare Systems: The Amazing Race to a Healthier World.
Comparative healthcare is a unique tool to observe globally how different cultures and countries address the universal challenge of keeping its humans healthy. In this study abroad program, you will be a practitioner investigating, comparing, and thoughtfully reflecting on the healthcare systems between the US, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
The UK uses their National Health Service, a publicly funded system that provides prescriptions, medical services, doctor’s visits, and hospital care for free. Italy uses their Servizio Sanitario Naionale, another publicly funded system that offers free services and places emphasis on preventative care and investments in medical research. The United States is a complex system with a mix of public and private sectors and does not run under the principles of universal coverage– people are either insured or uninsured, which affect one’s accessibility to various services. The United States is notable for advancements and innovation in their technology and practices. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, yet approaching this topic from a comparative lens can answer many questions.
