Travel Dates: May 28–June 13, 2027

This short-term study abroad program in Kenya prepares students for professional social work practice in an interconnected global context. Grounded in international social work and engagement with multicultural populations, the course combines academic preparation with immersive, community-based learning. Anchored in the Ubuntu philosophy of shared humanity and collective responsibility, the program aligns with social work values of dignity, human rights, and social justice. Through academic readings, guided reflection, cultural immersion, agency and school visits, participation in a university conference, and a community-based service-learning project, students will examine how poverty, structural inequality, and exposure to violence affect individuals, families, and communities. Engagement with children, educators, community members, social service professionals, and university partners, including visits to Lewa Children’s Home and Kip Keino School, will provide insight into community-based responses and culturally grounded practices. A trauma-informed lens will guide reflection on adversity, resilience, and systemic conditions within Kenyan contexts. These experiences will strengthen students’ global perspectives, cultural humility, critical thinking, and capacity for ethical, justice-oriented social work practice across diverse settings.
