A hillside community with houses painted in bright, geometric blocks of yellow, red, turquoise, green, and white, surrounded by dense green trees.

Travel Dates: July 8–17, 2027

Students will engage in a rich, cross-cultural, social work-centered learning opportunity that includes investigation and discussion of sustainable approaches to practice in the Dominican Republic. This course will include a service-learning experience in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; class discussion time in the Dominican Republic; and online instruction prior to and after the service-learning experience. Learning in the Dominican Republic will occur with the presence of both faculty members in-country and through a partnership with Comunidad Connect, a nonprofit organization in the Dominican Republic that is a University of Tennessee partner. While in the Dominican Republic, students will apply readings and pre-travel course materials to understanding community-engaged social work strategies that promote sustainable solutions to improved health and well-being. The service-learning experience will entail partnering with Comunidad Connect employees to meet with social work practitioners and educators, meet with local community leaders, and conduct psychosocial assessments with adults who are deaf. The educational setting will enable students to learn from Dominican Republic professionals and community members.
