Dr. Michael J. Blackwell, director of the Program for Pet Health Equity at the University of Tennessee, recently received the Together for Pets Award, which was accompanied by a $10,000 grant from Blue Buffalo. Through this initiative, Dr. Blackwell aims to improve access to veterinary care, focusing on supporting underserved families and those with limited financial resources.
Blue Buffalo honored veterinarians with their Together for Pets awards event during the Western Veterinary Conference. The event marked the third annual ceremony and a continued acknowledgement of the exceptional contributions many veterinarians make to the industry and society. Based on a stringent evaluation process within the Blue Buffalo organization, recipients receive a $10,000 grant to help advance the mission of their cause and continue their efforts to improve the lives of pets and their families. As of 2025, Blue Buffalo has donated over $120,000 to various organizations in the animal health industry.
Dr. Blackwell was one of four veterinarians honored with the 2025 Together for Pets award. His goal to always make a difference remains steadfast and unwavering. “Animals should never have to suffer because someone can’t afford to pay for the proper care. My job is to reduce that moral dilemma for the sake of everyone involved. This grant will help us to continue that mission. I am deeply grateful to be a recipient of such a generous award.”
Acknowledging that pets are an important piece of people’s lives, Blackwell noted, “It’s exciting to see how pets are truly considered part of the family. And as veterinarians, we should see ourselves as providers of family healthcare. We’re not just treating animals; we’re treating family members.”
The Program for Pet Health Equity’s mission is to advance pet family health equity through a
One Health approach, transforming communities to ensure access to essential care and integrated services.
