First Gen Docs Program: Supporting First-Generation Scholars on Their Doctoral Journey in Social Work

What is the First Gen Docs Program?

It’s an intensive training initiative designed to prepare first-generation scholars for successful matriculation into a doctoral program in social work. The program emphasizes three key pillars: Connection, Community, and Education. This program is FREE to all selected participants.

This hybrid program offers selected scholars’ workshops, networking opportunities, family information sessions, and community presentations to support their journey toward becoming doctoral students in social work. Scholars will have to commit to participating in both virtual sessions and in-person campus training.

When does the program happen?

Virtual Sessions (March–May 2025, dates TBA)
Selected scholars will participate in five Zoom sessions, totaling six hours of programming. These sessions will be hosted on Canvas.

Campus In-Person Residency (June 20–24, 2025)
Participants will visit the Knoxville campus for a 5-day, 4-night residency coinciding with the Doctor of Social Work Program residency week. This immersive experience will allow participants to network with current doctoral students and faculty while attending specialized workshops, the DSW Student Research Symposium, a networking dinner with doctoral students, and one-on-one sessions with faculty mentors.
