Spring Break Social Justice Trip Creates Meaningful Impact for Students

Spring break provided the perfect opportunity for UTCSW students to visit the nation’s capital for a Social Justice trip that created a meaningful impact and thoughtful reflection.

Students from across all UTCSW programs, including the BSSW, MSSW, PhD, and DSW, traveled to Washington, D.C. and spent two days at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where they participated in self-directed tours. In addition, a small group took a short tour of the Capitol.

These visits created significant opportunities for students to reflect on the connections between history, memory, and professional obligations under CSWE to advance social justice, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive practice. Both museums prompted deep reflection on the lessons of the past and their continued relevance in today’s world.

“The trip was very powerful for the students,” said Dr. Mary Gitau, Associate Dean of Access, Belonging, and Global Engagement. “They all expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity of the experience. For some students, it was their first time flying, which made the trip especially meaningful and life changing. This was definitely a journey they will remember for many years to come.”
