Course Description
As a mental health provider, you have likely heard that LGBTQ+ individuals are at higher risk for suicide than the general population. Within the queer community, transgender and nonbinary individuals are at the highest risk for suicide while also being less understood, less studied, and more stigmatized.
As trans and nonbinary people are gaining more visibility in society, more trans, nonbinary, and questioning clients are seeking our help as mental health providers. Many of them, whether they share it with us or not, are contemplating ending their lives.
When sitting with a suicidal trans person, we need greater understanding of their experience along with queer-affirming practices and tools to help them unmask the realness and vision within themselves that will restore and sustain hope. This training will help you connect with, understand, and tap into the well of inherent resilience already within your trans and nonbinary clients.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and describe clinical and systemic vulnerabilities that increase suicide risk in the trans/nonbinary community;
- Describe and implement effective practices to build rapport and assess for suicidality with trans and nonbinary clients;
- Describe and implement effective queer-affirming, trauma-informed, and neurodivergence-affirming intervention strategies that reduce suicidality with trans and nonbinary clients; and
- Identify and make necessary, affirming referrals for trans and nonbinary clients that sustain hope and resilience beyond preventing suicide completion.
