The First Gen Docs Program is designed to prepare first-generation scholars for successful matriculation into a doctoral program in social work. Format & Commitments
Virtual Sessions
February–May 2026, dates TBA
- Six virtual sessions
- Seven hours of programming
- Hosted on Zoom
Campus In-Person Residency
June 20–24, 2026
5-day, 4-night residency on the Knoxville campus
Participants will:
- Network with current doctoral students and faculty
- Attend specialized workshops
- Attend the DSW Student Research Symposium
- Join a networking dinner with doctoral students
- Participate in one-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty
Who Is Eligible To Apply?
The program is open to first-generation college graduates, defined as individuals whose parents or guardians did not earn a bachelor’s degree, who have earned a master’s degree in social work and possess at least three years of post-master’s professional experience. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a doctoral degree in social work and be willing to fully participate in both the virtual sessions and in-person residency in Knoxville.
