Charlie Burchett is in his second year of the Master of Social Work program. He is set to graduation in May 2022.
What would you like to do after you finish your degree?
When I finish with school, I would like to provide therapy at an agency that works with children and families.
Did you always know you wanted to go into social work?
No. I received my BS in Marketing from UTK in 1983. After 38 “gap years” I decided to go back to school.
Where is your field placement?
My field placement is at the Harmony Family Center. The experience has been great. I have had the opportunity to work with children and adolescents that have lived through some serious trauma as well as working with their parents. I have been extremely impressed with the therapists and high level of caring that Harmony provides for their clients.
If someone was thinking about majoring in Social Work at UT, what would you tell them? Regardless of your background or prior education, if you have a heart to help people in need, social work provides a wonderful opportunity to serve.
Anything else you’d like to add?
You are never too old to make a life change. It will be worth it.
