Staff Profile – Margaret Huffstetler

Margaret Huffstetler is an Academic Advisor for the UTCSW. She has been in this role since October 2021.

How long have you worked at the College of Social Work?
I have been employed by the College of Social Work since October of 2021, totaling over two years of service. My connection to the College goes way back, as I am also an alumnus of our BSSW program, graduating in the spring of 2013. Prior to joining the College of Social Work, I dedicated time to working in prevention and early intervention services, and most recently, I worked in school-based mental health services with the McNabb Center in the Knoxville, TN area.

What does your job entail?
As an academic advisor, my job primarily entails meeting and assisting my 228 assigned online MSSW and honors BSSW students. My responsibilities include aiding students in developing their academic plan, interpreting academic policies and procedures, assisting with registration, mentoring students around Social Work values & ethics, and fostering their development toward academic success.

What is your favorite part of the job and/or favorite part of UT?

Two aspects of my job stand out as favorites. Firstly, I enjoy interacting with my colleagues on the student success team. Their support is invaluable, and I genuinely believe in our mission. Secondly, I very much enjoy interacting with Social Work students. Engaging with students is a source of energy for me, and I am grateful student-focused work is a significant part of my role. Regarding UT, I appreciate the opportunity as staff to participate on committees or in professional development beyond our daily responsibilities. Being involved in the Professional Development Committee, Strategic Plan Steering Committee, and the DEI book club within the Division of Student Success has enriched my experience here.

What do you like best about living and working in the Knoxville area?

Having grown up in Knoxville, I appreciate the close proximity to wonderful hiking trails, greenspaces, and National Parks and Forests. Exploring the Smoky Mountains through hiking and discovering new restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops in the Knoxville area are wonderful ways to spend the weekends.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?
An interesting fact about me is that I obtained my master’s degree in social work abroad in Dublin, Ireland. I lived in Dublin for two years while pursuing my degree from the University College Dublin (UCD). This experience broadened my worldview, and I am grateful for the impactful learning experiences facilitated by my UCD Professors, cohorts, and amazing practice teachers. I encourage anyone considering studying abroad to explore the possibilities, research, ask lots of questions, and lean into the experience with an open mind.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I am currently reading “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride (book suggestion from my colleague Kristin Pearson) and “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah.
