Requirements
The certificate requires 21 credit hours of graduate course work: nine (9) elective credit hours specifically designated as trauma-specific and 12 credit hours in a trauma-specific field placement (i.e., a placement in which more than half of the student’s time is spent working with traumatized clients and client systems).
More specific requirements of the TTGC are as follows:
Trauma Elective (9 hours)
All TTGC students must take SW531: Foundations of Trauma as an elective. This course introduces students to theories of trauma and its neuro-biopsychosocial responses, as well as different forms of trauma-producing experiences, such as oppression, poverty, inter- and intrapersonal violence, and human-made/natural disasters. All TTGC students must also complete two additional trauma-specific electives, as listed below, for a total of nine credit hours.
- Two of the following TTGC electives:
- SW529 – Military Social Work Practice
- SW533 – Trauma Treatment with Adults
- SW534 – Trauma Treatment with Children and Adolescents
- SW535 – School Social Work
- SW564 – Substance Use Disorders
- Any other elective that is communicated as approved by the TTGC chair
Field Practice (12 hours)
Twelve (12) credit hours in a concentration MSSW field placement where student learning plans will include trauma-related assignments. While you will work with your field instructor to develop assignments related to your placement, the attached document is formulated by the TTGC chair and the UTCSW field team. It shows ideas of trauma-related assignments that could work for your learning plan.
