Social Work, DSW
The University of Tennessee’s online DSW program prepares practicing clinicians to advance their careers without stepping away from their work. Ranked #1 among online DSW programs and one of only three CSWE-accredited Doctor of Social Work programs in the United States. Our Clinical Practice and Leadership program is designed for experienced clinical social workers who want to deepen their practice, develop leadership skills, and advance their careers — all without pausing their current work. Complete your doctorate in just three years at one of the most affordable DSW programs in the country.
Overview
The Doctor of Social Work (DSW) at the University of Tennessee is a practice-focused doctoral degree designed for busy professionals. Unlike research-focused PhD programs, our DSW emphasizes advanced clinical social work, evidence-based practice, clinical leadership, and applied research — preparing you for the highest levels of clinical practice, administration, and social work education.
As one of only three Doctor of Social Work programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in the U.S., your degree carries the gold standard of professional recognition.
Our DSW program is delivered entirely online, which means you can continue working as a clinical social worker while earning your doctorate. All DSW students attend a one-week on-campus residency in Knoxville during each of their first two summers, plus a three-day new student orientation in June before their first fall semester. These campus visits provide face-to-face connection with faculty and cohort members while keeping the overall format flexible for working professionals.

DSW vs. PhD in Social Work
One of the most common questions prospective doctoral students ask is: “Should I get a DSW or a PhD?” The answer depends on your career goals. Both are terminal doctoral degrees in social work — but they’re designed for different paths.
Choose the DSW if you want to stay in practice, move into senior leadership, or teach practice-oriented courses — without leaving your career. The DSW is built for experienced social workers who want to lead, not just study.
Choose the PhD if your primary goal is to conduct original research, publish in academic journals, and pursue a tenure-track faculty position at a research university.
The University of Tennessee offers both the DSW and the PhD in social work — giving you the flexibility to choose the path that best fits your professional aspirations.
Why Choose UT’s Doctor of Social Work?
The DSW landscape has grown rapidly — with 60+ programs now available nationwide. Here’s what sets the University of Tennessee apart:
#1 Ranked — and CSWE-Accredited
UT’s DSW program is ranked #1 overall among online DSW programs and holds an 8-year CSWE practice doctorate accreditation — the longest possible term. Only a handfull of programs in the U.S. have earned this distinction. CSWE accreditation at the doctoral level signals that the program meets national standards for curriculum, faculty qualifications, and student outcomes — a credential that matters increasingly for teaching positions and institutional credibility.
One of the Most Affordable DSW Programs in the Country
The UT DSW is consistently recognized as one of the most affordable Doctor of Social Work programs in the United States. As a public, land-grant university, UT offers doctoral-level education at a fraction of the cost of comparable programs at private institutions — many of which charge two to three times more for the same credential. For current tuition rates and fee schedules, visit Vols Online or the UT OneStop Student Services tuition page.
Designed for Working Clinicians
Our DSW students are experienced LCSWs who continue full-time clinical practice throughout the program. On average, UT DSW students have been out of their MSW program for 12 years and have held LCSW licensure for 9 years. You’ll apply what you learn in real time, gaining new clinical skills and leadership competencies that immediately enhance your practice.
Clinical Practice and Leadership Focus
While some DSW programs emphasize broad social work administration, UT’s curriculum is specifically built around advanced clinical social work — including neuroscience for clinical practice, advanced evidence-based practice for addictions and dual diagnosis, clinical supervision and consultation, and applied research. This clinical depth is what practicing LCSWs need to take their work to the next level.
Impact Where It Matters
At least 60% of UT DSW graduates practice in Tennessee, with half working in rural and underserved areas. Our program is designed to strengthen the clinical social work workforce where it’s needed most.
Applied Capstone — Not a Traditional Dissertation
The DSW capstone is a practice-focused applied project — not a traditional academic dissertation. You’ll identify a real-world challenge in your organization or community and develop an evidence-based solution. This approach means you graduate with something immediately applicable to your career, not a document that sits on a shelf.
Curriculum
The DSW program includes eight semesters of rigorous coursework (48 credit hours), with students taking two courses each semester (6 credit hours). You’ll follow a structured course sequence — there is no elective selection, ensuring every student receives the same comprehensive clinical and leadership preparation.
The curriculum culminates in two capstone research papers that serve as your comprehensive examinations. Students select a research topic, prepare a literature review, develop a research proposal, and present an oral defense — producing applied scholarship with immediate relevance to their clinical practice.
What Can You Do with a Doctor of Social Work?
A Doctor of Social Work opens doors to the highest-level positions in clinical practice, administration, academia, and policy. DSW graduates consistently earn significantly more than MSW-level professionals and are qualified for leadership roles that require doctoral credentials.
Clinical Director
Lead clinical teams and oversee treatment programs at hospitals, mental health agencies, and behavioral health organizations. Set clinical standards, supervise licensed practitioners, and drive evidence-based practice across your organization.
Healthcare Social Work Administrator
Direct social work departments in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and integrated healthcare systems. Manage staff, budgets, and programs that address the psychosocial needs of patients and families.
Social Work Professor
Teach the next generation of social workers at the university level. A DSW qualifies you for faculty positions at many colleges and universities — particularly those focused on practice-oriented education. DSW holders are increasingly sought after for clinical teaching roles.
Executive Director — Nonprofit or Social Services Agency
Lead organizations at the executive level. DSW graduates bring the combination of clinical expertise, research fluency, and organizational leadership that boards and funders look for in executive leadership.
Policy Director or Advocate
Shape social policy at the state and national level. Use your advanced research and analytical skills to influence legislation, lead advocacy organizations, and drive systemic change.
Private Practice — Advanced Clinical Practice
Operate an advanced private practice with the authority and credibility of a doctoral credential. A DSW signals the highest level of clinical expertise to clients, insurers, and referral sources.
This program has created such hope for me for the future of social work practice. I have an incredible cohort, and our professors are so supportive. The coursework is challenging, but practical, in a way that encourages growth and development. The staff at UTK are also amazing- I have never been to a university that has intentionally set up so much support to ensure that students make it through the program.
