Staff Profile- Katie Banks

Katie Banks is the PhD Administrative Specialist for the CSW. She is also an alum of the college, having received her BSSW in 2008.

How long have you worked at the College of Social Work?
I started working with the College of Social Work in September 2023. Before coming to UTK, I was working in East TN as a social worker. I previously worked at Project Transition’s SOS Program (SOS Team Lead) and before that at HRMC in several of their Homeless Outreach Programs (PATH, SOAR, ITT, and C&Y).

What does your job entail?
As the PhD Administrative Specialist, I support both the PhD Program Director Dr. Gretchen Ely, and the students here within the College of Social Work. My work can include anything from event planning, working with prospective applicants, processing student forms (both throughout the program and to help prepare students for their dissertations/graduations), processing student and faculty travel, and just supporting the PhD program as needed throughout the day.

What is your favorite part of the job and/or favorite part of UT?
I was called to be a social worker because I have a passion for helping others, both inside and outside of my own community. Sadly, like a lot of social workers, I began to experience high levels of burnout. The wonderful thing about starting this job and working within the College of Social Work is that not only can I continue to help others, but I also get to work in a supportive and positive environment. Also, it doesn’t hurt that I am working with my alma mater. (I graduated from the CSW in 2008).

What do you like best about living and working in the Knoxville area?
I was born and raised in East TN (Powell area), and I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in Knoxville over the last 38 years. Despite these changes, the enduring moniker “Scruffy City” (originally an insult) remains strangely fitting. While we enjoy breathtaking views and a lively cultural scene, Knoxville still has untapped potential for improvement and expansion.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?
I really enjoy playing Dungeons and Dragons. I was introduced to the game by a friend back in 2015 and since then it has consumed most of my weekends! This passion led my friend and I to start a podcast called “Brunches and Dragons,” where we aim to share our love for the game itself and to introduce to others the world of D&D.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I just want to say thank you for everyone that has been so helpful and welcoming during my time here so far. I am so happy to be part of this wonderful team.
